Notice

is hereby given that a Meeting of the Ratepayers of the Township of Crosthwaite with Lyth will be held in the Vestry of Crosthwaite Church at 2 o'clock P.M. on Thursday the 11th day of December for the purpose of considering the desirability of raising the quarter pence at both the Crosthwaite Endowed School and the Infant School at the Howe and also determining the best means to meet this Payment of the annual expenses connected with both the above schools.

Crosthwaite Vicarage Edward Wilson
Nov 20 1879

In Accordance with the preceding Notice the Meeting was held first in the Vestry of Crosthwaite Church and afterwards by adjournment (Proposed by Mr Michael Bennett and seconded by Mr John Burrow and none dissenting) in the Crosthwaite Endowed School. It was first proposed by Mr Robert Burrow, seconded by Mr Thomas Gibson that the quarter pence be doubled all through the Parish. An amendment was therefore proposed by Mr George Pearson and seconded by Mr Robert Matthews that Town End Division should as hitherto pay nothing at all.

Neither Proposition nor amendment deemed to receive the support of the majority present. Thereupon it was proposed by Mr Burrow and seconded by Mr George Pearson that a Penny rate should be laid throughout the Parish for the sum £13-5-2 now lapsed since the new school was built for repairing the Schoolmaster's House: the annual gift of £10 per annum to the Howe School and other necessary expenses connected with the two schools. That a voluntary rate of one penny in the Pound should be submitted throughout the Parish of Crosthwaite and Lyth and the sum to be realised thereby should be taken out of the Rents of Whitbarrow to refund the Master of £13-5-2 now lapsed since building the new school for repairs of the School Master's House: for the £10 grant to the Howe School as has been paid for the year, and other items necessary for the annual working of the two schools: if approved by Mr Argles.
