Crosthwaite and Lyth WI enjoyed very pleasing success with their co-operative entries in the Westmorland Show. Against very stiff competition, C&L were awarded Second prize for their entry the A1 class, ‘An Inspirational Woman’.
They chose to represent Lady Gertrude Denman, the founder of the WI. Amongst many other achievements, Lady Denman secured the extra sugar rations for the newly formed WIs so that they could make best use of Home produced fruit by making jam. She was also instrumental in creating the Land Army, and bequeathed Denman College as a centre for learning for WI members to this day. There were 6 members involved in creating the exhibit, which included a tailored jacket, made by Christine Gibson, a silver pendant made at Denman College by Pam Bownass, a knitted Land Army doll made by Anne Douglas. Produce including jam made by Jean Sherratt and a cake in the shape of a hat, made by Glyn Bosson completed the display.

In the A2 Class, the group were awarded second prize for their ‘Ladies who Lunch’ exhibit. Three delicious courses, prepared by Marilyn Shuttleworth, Jean Sherratt and Glyn Bosson were displayed with craft items by Pam Bownass and Anne Douglas.

The B3 exhibit, ‘To Mother With Love’ also gained second prize, and was awarded gold for both staging and interpretation. Craft items were a greeting card and a knitted shawl, by Pam Bownass and Anne Douglas.
