Crosthwaite Community News report August 23rd 2018
Crosthwaite and Lyth WI celebrated their 90th Birthday in style by inviting members and guests to a very special Supper in the Argles Memorial Hall.
72 members and guests, all from the local community, were treated to a wonderful evening. The event was a true community effort, with local Caterer Liz Clarke providing the excellent buffet supper, committee members providing desserts, and helping to serve. Dinner suited waiters John Pearson and Hartley Trotter greeted guests on arrival with prosecco, and ably assisted by Peter Sherratt, they kept the wine flowing all evening.
Jim Bownass provided the screen and technical assistance for the speaker.
The hall looked magnificent, decorated by the committee and friends, with bunting and balloons, floral decorations were arranged by member Vonnie Sharp. A special 90th birthday cake was provided by Geraldine Wilson and Caroline Holmes. Jean Sceal engaged the speaker. Cards and greetings were on display from other WIs, including partner WI Bingley.
President Jean Sherratt welcomed speaker Dr Jean Turnbull, who gave a fascinating presentation of Local Oral History, focusing on recordings of memories of life in the rural South Lakes in the late 1920ís when the branch was founded.
Member Marilyn Shuttleworth had researched the history of the beginnings of Crosthwaite and Lyth WI. Many of the family names of the founder members were familiar, with descendants as current members, and guests shared many of the memories recalled in the presentation.
